10.00 -11:30 Workshop: Tinikling - Folklorico Filipino Austria
Tinikling is a traditional Philippine folk dance which originated prior to Spanish colonialism in the area. The dance involves at least two people beating, tapping, and sliding bamboo poles on the ground and against each other in coordination with one or more dancers who step over and in between the poles in a dance. It is traditionally danced to rondalla music, a sort of serenade played by an ensemble of stringed instruments which originated in Spain during the Middle Ages. The locomotor movements used in this dance are hopping, jumping, and turning. (Source: Wikipedia)

In this workshop, we will reflect on what legacy means to us now and envision the legacies we want to create for future generations. As Filipinos in diaspora, we navigate the rich tapestry of knowledge, culture, and wisdom passed down to us. Many of us are searching for connections to our Filipino ancestors and our place within this lineage. Through sharing our personal experiences and perspectives on legacy, we will explore creative expressions using language (spoken or written), simple movement, and music.
This inclusive workshop welcomes everyone—whether you're curious about your heritage or eager to share your insights. Together, we'll co-create a brave space for exchange and play. No prior experience is needed—just bring your curiosity and willingness to connect.
Highlights:
- Reflect on and define your personal concept of legacy.
- Engage with others in the Filipino diaspora in Austria and beyond.
- Express yourself creatively through language, movement, and music.

11.00 - 12.00 Panel: "In solidarity for environmental rights – local and global challenges"
Climate change affects us around the world, but some areas are hit by environmental disasters harder than others. Especially those who contribute less to worldwide carbon emissions suffer the most, as statistics show. The Philippines is among the most vulnerable countries. Although being used to typhoons, heavy rains and floods, it becomes more difficult for communities to protect themselves and to recover from disasters. The talk will look at climate change and environmental activism in the Philippines and discuss possibilities of international support and solidarity.

12.50 - 13.50 Panel: "The second and third generation’s commitment to support relatives in the Philippines: Quo vadis remittances, Balikbayan Box & Co?" *
The transfer of migrants' remittances is one of the most important phenomena of international migration. According to World Bank data in 2023 worldwide remittances were – after a short slow down due to the pandemic crisis - still growing in contrast to FDI (foreign direct investments) or ODA (official development assistance). With $39.1 billion and a share of 9 per cent of the GDP these money transactions from Filipin@s abroad to their relatives at home represent an important source of income for the Philippines.
After a short presentation and overview of global money transfers and their contribution to the economic development of the Philippines, the discussion will focus on the socio-cultural, both positive and negative, aspects.
Do the second and third generation of Austro-Filipinos send money and in-kind transfers to their relatives in the Philippines to the same extent as their parents' generation, whose primary goal in migrating was to support those who stayed at home? Is an inherent debt of gratitude (utang na loob) transferred from parents to their children and grandchildren?
Are the agendas of the first generation taken over when they die or when there is less money available due to retirement?
Is the second-generation ready to make the effort to collect items and fill a Balikbayan Box or do they prefer the more convenient way of money transactions?
Do the recipients of the remittances use the payments as a “social hammock” or whether they invest them primarily in the future (education, saving for worse times)?

16.00 - 17.00 "Tracing Mother Lines" - 3 short films and panel
Filmprojekt von Kathrin Knoepfle
Mutter

13.00 - 14.30 Participatory Live Performance Act/Room Installatory: "Magpahinga + matulog"
In performance art the artist uses her own actions, her own body or her own presence as a medium. As a rule, this involves live performative events in which interaction with the audience plays a major role.
In “magpahinga + matulog | to rest + to sleep | ausruhen + schlafen”, the space becomes a total work of art, the observers become part of the performance: mats, blankets and cushions invite you to rest for a moment, to join the artist or the small group around her. It is not a siesta; it is an invitation to rest in public and possibly fall asleep, it is a performative exploration of vulnerability and privacy, and the testing of radical self-care.
The resting people reveal their most intimate state, while at the same time boundaries become blurred: what is public, what is private? Are the observers subjects or objects? What is personal and what is performative?
The performance gives visitors the choice of becoming an active part by becoming de-active, or walking from station to station, camp to camp as an observer and discovering the various information points. This also allows them to become part of the artwork. Sleep is universal. Everyone needs to sleep. If we don't sleep enough, an imbalance occurs that affects us mentally, emotionally, spiritually and physically. If these imbalances are not corrected, the deterioration of our physical self begins. Our ancestors knew that the human body has the ability to regenerate itself, but that imbalances exist.
A culture of performance-oriented work and productivity has drastic effects on our health and personal rest(lessness). In an increasingly fast-paced world, rest and retreat are political. A self-determined approach to one's own rest time means restoring one's own strength and energy and thus ensuring a healthy balance.
60min live performance with background music and 30min talk.

16.00 - 17.00 Presentation and interview: "Voice, Presence, and Rights Claiming: Counter-discourse formation among undocumented Filipino migrant workers in a hostile UK immigration policy"
The talk will be set in the broader context of the challenges faced by the Filipino diaspora in Europe and their efforts to address them including their project to improve their visibility and representation.
This talk looks at the representational practices of undocumented Filipino migrants in the context of a hostile UK immigration policy. Specifically, it aims to: 1) reflect on how East and Southeast Asian communities more broadly have contested their media representations and ‘ethnic’ (in)visibility in the UK; 2) look at how consciousness formation underpins counter-discourse formation; 3) examine how undocumented Filipino migrants are engaged in fighting to secure their stay in the UK through counter-discourse formation that reimagines who and what they are in British society.
